There was a time when ventilators are used in toilets for air circulation. Nowadays we use windows in toilets of modern buildings.
Toilet windows are normally called high window. Because the height of these windows is less than the height of bedroom’s window or some other windows of a building. Depending on the owner’s requirement, a window size of toilets are normally kept 2′ x 2′ or 3′ x 2′.
As a toilet requires more privacy so the window height is reduced.
Where there is a window, there should a grill to be fixed for safety purpose. In a toilet, we obviously fix a window grill.
As we fix tiles in a toilet’s wall, we need to take special care and consider a few things during fixing window grills.
So what things should we consider before fixing window grill in toilets?
2 Considering Things Before Fixing Window Grills in Toilets
You need to consider the following things before fixing window grill in toilets.
1. Rainwater Barrier:
Rainwater barrier is a 1½” thick CC barrier made under the window grill. It is made to prevent rainwater penetration through the window.
Some prefer not to use rainwater barrier and some prefer to use that. In my opening, it is good to use rainwater barrier below window grill.
If you want to use rainwater barrier in the window of a toilet then you have to consider many things. For example, you will install a 2′ x 2′ window in a toilet. If you want to keep the window size exactly 2′ x 2′, then you have to reduce the grill size.
In that case, you need to deduct the height of rainwater barrier from the height of the window to get the grill height. You don’t have to consider the width of the window. You just need to reduce the height.
So, for a 2 feet height window, the grill height will be,
= 2′ – 1½” (2 feet = 24 inches)
When making a grill for the window of the toilet, keep the grill size 24″ x 22½”. See the image below.
But if you want to keep the grill size 2′ x 2′, then the height of the window will be increased. In that case, the window height will be 24″ x 25 ½”.
If you don’t want to use rainwater barrier then you can keep the grill size and aluminum size same.
So, when it is shown in the architectural drawing that the window size is 2’x2′, you need to look for if there is any window section in the drawing. If found, that’s ok. You can install the window as shown in the section. If not found, consult with the respective person to make the decision.
2. Placement of Window Grills
This is another considering point of fixing window grill.
How will you place the window grill?
Window grill of a toilet, I’ve seen, are placed in two ways. In one way, it is placed inside the window. That means, there will be a gap between wall tiles and the grill.
In another way, the grill is kept aligned with the wall tiles. See the image below.
If you want to fix the grill inside the window, you just need to keep the grill aligned with the wall. So that, after fixing wall tiles the gap between wall tiles and the grill remain same.
If you want to keep the grill and wall tiles in the same alignment, you have to decide one thing. That is, will you fix the grill before tiles work or after the tiles work.
There are several things involved. Such as, If you decide to fix the window grill after tiles work then it will be easy for you to keep the wall tiles and grill in the same alignment. In that case, you need to left wall tiles installation around the window. After fixing grill, you have to come back to fix those tiles around the window. And it is time-consuming. If you are on tight schedule to finish the project then this strategy is not good for you.
If this is the situation, you may want to fix the grill before tiles work. In that case, you have to be very careful fixing the grill. So that, after fixing tiles on the wall, the grill remain aligned with the wall tiles.
You can fix window grills in toilets as you want. That will serve the same purpose. But, if you take a little more extra care it’ll prevent water penetration through the window and increases the aesthetic look of the window.
You just need to consider two things – one is Rainwater Barrier and another is the placement of the Grill.
