This debate has been continuing for long that whether we should use grills in a window of a residential building or not.
Nevertheless, we are using grills in windows of a residential building for mainly safety purpose.
It is not only used for safety purpose, it also increases the aesthetic looks of a window.
Architects apply different design and color to window grills for increasing its aesthetic look.
However, as a construction professional, we often need to receive window grills for our building construction project. During receiving window grills we need to check several things to make sure it is qualified as well as we will not face any difficulties during our finishing work.
8 Things to Check When Receiving Window Grills in a Building Construction Project
Whether you make grills in your project or buy from suppliers, check the following things in a window grill when receiving –
1. Check Quality of Grill’s Material
Of course, you need to check the materials used to make window grills.
The materials used to make grill is depended on the material specification of the project.
Check the material specification of the project you are working on.
Suppose, in the material specification, it is suggested to use ½” solid bar for making window grill. So, check the window grill during receiving, whether it is made with ½” solid bar or ½” hollow bar.
If you ordered for ½” solid bar, you should get that. Not the ½” hollow bar.
Also, check the size of bars used to make window grills. If you ordered for ½” bar, you should get ½” bar, not less than that. Because you should get what you paid for.
2. Check if The Grill is Made as Designed
Grill design is shown in the architectural drawing.
Check the architectural drawing how the grill is designed. What is the spacing between horizontal bars? What is the spacing between vertical bars? What is the size of horizontal bars? What is the size of vertical bars? There may be size variation in horizontal and vertical bars.
You actually need to check these things before ordering the grills or making the grills. During receiving, check the grill design is same as shown in the architectural drawing.
Once I ordered window grills which are made of ½” solid bar. In the grill design, there is a frame all around the grill. I thought that is also ½” solid bar.
But, after ordering, I noticed, that is not ½” solid bar. That is ¼” flat bar.
So, check the grill design properly before ordering. And during receiving the grill in your project, check the grills are made as you ordered.
3. Check Spacing of Bars in Window Grills
If the spacing of bars isn’t equal in all gaps in a window grills, it will look ought.
So, make sure all the gaps among vertical bars and horizontal bars are same in a window grill.
4. Check The Dimension of Grills
Although the width of a grill is same as the width of the window, the height differs from the window. I’ve talked about this before in “How to define window grill size?”.
When receiving grills in your project, check the dimension of grills in both directions.
5. Check the straightness of grill’s bars
Window grills are joined by welding pieces of bars with one another.
If the grill maker is not skilled enough, there is a possibility to have an alignment variation in a bar.
So, check all the bars are in the same alignment.
You can check this with a thin rope. Hold the rope at both ends of a bar to check the alignment of the bar.
Do this for all horizontal and vertical bars in each window grill.
6. Check The Diagonal Dimension of Window Grills
Diagonal dimensions are checked to know if the alignment of a grill is correct or not. If the diagonal dimension for both directions is same, then the grill is truly vertical and truly horizontal.
You can check this with a measuring tape or a rope.
7. Check The Window Grill is not Bent in Middle
It happens. You found everything is correct. But, there is a possibility to be bent a grill in the middle.
You can check this by placing a rope on a window grill and hold it at both ends.
If the grill is bent in the middle, you can see it visually.
8. Check The Grill is Well welded and Grinded
As you know grill bars are welded to join. You need to check two things in this respect. One is grills are well welded and the another is, the welded portion is grinded properly.
You can check the welding visually. And check the grinding by rubbing a finger on the welded joint.
Check the above-discussed things properly during receiving grills in your project. So that, you don’t need to remove grills after fixing those in the window rough opening. If you need to remove and refix window grills, it will increase the cost of the project.
